Read MoreCharles Phillips enlisted in the US Army on 14 Aug 1862, and was mustered into Co. E (Lewis Guard), 28th Regiment at Camp Washburn, Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 13 Aug 1862. His back was injured on 10 Jan 1863 at Helena, Arkansas ("while lined up in trench with other soldiers, when another soldier landed on his back with both feet"). "The man referred to in this letter deserted on Sunday Jan 28th 1863- from Helena Ark, less than 60 days after we left the state and never turned up again." Charles and Sarah's family is listed on the 1870 census at Trenton, Pierce County, Wisconsin. His parents, John and Mary Phillips, were living with them. Charles died 3 Jun 1872 at the age of 37 at Trenton, Wisconsin. His widow Sarah was unable to collect a widow's pension because he was reported as "deserted".
