Upper Michigan- Lights & Falls

In August 2008 we took a road trip with our son Mike and daughter-in-law Cinnamon to Michigan's UP. Our goal was to explore the Lake Michigan shoreline, especially the Pictured Rocks National Seashore. What a beautiful area! I was happy to add several lighthouses to my "collection".

    The Gale Staples was carrying coal when it was caught in a fierce storm and grounded in 1918. Its crew was rescued as well.

The long iron treenails -- fasteners that held the bones of the boat together -- rise eerily from the remains of all the wrecks.
    First glimpse of the Au Sable Point Lighthouse. Au Sable Point Lighthouse is one of the least accessible mainland light stations in the United States. Just as its keepers once did, visitors today must walk to it, but only 1.5 miles.
